Access to the Danaca Board Room can be done through the side door of the building,  up a short flight of stairs, through the door and turn right to the elevator, the Danaca room is on the third floor. Parking is available and please park on the canal side of the parking lot.  We will have the room from 18:30 to 21:00 hrs. and a cash bar will be provided. A map showing the location of the Mess is attached for your convenience.

ABSTRACT

The topic of this paper will be Belzona Solutions in the Marine Industry and the paper will be touching on the following topics:

  • Onboard Solutions: Valves & pipes, Pumps, Heat exchangers, Filters, Tanks, Wet spaces, General repairs
  • Dry Dock Solutions: Bow Thrusters, Rudder, Kort Nozzle, Tail Shaft, Stern Tube, Engine Block, Fender.

SPEAKER:

This paper will be presented by Mr. Jon Ferrer who is the Technical Sales Manager for Belzona Great Lakes Division.

Mr. Ferrer is a chemical engineer with a degree from the University of Ottawa and a technical diploma in Electromechanical Engineering – Technician Robotics from Algonquin College. He began his career with Belzona Inc. in 2016 as a Technical Sales Engineer and is now part of the Belzona Great Lakes team, focusing specifically on the Ontario province.

Throughout his time with Belzona, Mr. Ferrer has provided both remote and on-site engineering support to Belzona’s American network of distributors and technical consultants. He now works directly with asset owners and consultants across various industries, including oil and gas, petrochemical, pulp and paper, mining and quarrying, marine, water and wastewater, and general manufacturing. His role also involves writing product specifications for Belzona applications and contributing articles to several industry-focused magazines and newsletters.

ABSTRACT

The marine industry is moving to decarbonize as emissions reduction and climate goals become more important each year.  Big shifts to alternative fuels and major infrastructure changes may be coming, but there are options available to ship owners right now which can provide both immediate emissions reductions and ROI through fuel savings and lower running hours on equipment, among other benefits.

The presentation will provide an overview of two such studies – retrofit of shore power systems and Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) for bulk carriers trading on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.  While both technologies are well understood, comprehensive feasibility studies for their implementation in this region, with its unique challenges and opportunities, are new.  The presentation will explain two of these studies being undertaken by ABS and Algoma Central Corporation thanks to funding from Transport Canada, the work completed to date, and early results.

Shipbuilders and Marine Engineers Golf Tournament

Registration closes JUNE 13, 2024

Good afternoon everyone on this beautiful day!  We are about a month away from the Shipbuilders and Marine Engineers Golf tournament 2024 and registration is now over half full!  We will be having the tournament at the beautiful Chester Golf Course this year on Thursday June 13, 2024 starting at 830am!

We are happy to be able to keep the cost at $175.00 per player, $700.00 per team of 4 this year with golf cart included.  Adjustments will be made for current members for golf and dinner only.  We will be having BBQ chicken dinners at the end of the tournament.  If there are any dietary restrictions please let us know

With everyone receiving a prize we are always looking for donations and will gladly accept any prizes or monetary donations to help with the prizes.  All profits from the tournament will be given as donations to the Mission of Seafarers and Bonny Lea farm. 

 If you have any donations please drop them off at International Paint at 250 Brownlow Avenue Suite 2 or I can pick them up and we will ensure they are included with the prizes.  Remember the more donations, the more we can donate as a group to Bonny Lea and Mission to seafarers.

Conversion of a Cape Islander to Battery Electric Hybrid, before and after emissions study

Abstract:

Glas Ocean Electric has worked with Transport Canada, Canadian Maritime Engineering and others to complete a study on the impact of electrifying a fishing boat on air emissions, noise emissions and power use in normal operation. The boat was converted to an electric parallel -battery hybrid capable of operating in electric or diesel mode on command. The presentation will include discussion of the dramatic drop in hydrocarbon emissions and underwater noise as well as detailing the process for converting a boat and collecting the required data.

Dr. Sue Molloy,

Dr. Sue Molloy, holds a PhD in Naval Architectural and Ocean Engineering and is the CEO/president of Glas Ocean Electric (GOE), a Nova Scotia-based company seeking ways to electrify marine assets to reduce emissions during operation and provide vehicle to grid opportunities. In 2021 Sue and her team won the Lieutenant Governor’s award for Excellence in Engineering. Sue is a board member of the Council of Canadian Academies, a former elected member of Engineers Nova Scotia and recently completed her term as a co-chair for Canada’s Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Discovery Grant program. Sue is an active reviewer for the US Department of Energy, Canadian national programs, many journals and is a passionate award-winning member of standards committees in the IEC and ISO. Sue is currently the Canadian Chair of ISO TC 8, Ships and Marine Technology and is the international convenor for the IEC committee focused on river turbine performance.

Technical Presentation by Silverstream Technologies – Pioneering Air Lubrication for Shipping

Abstract:

For over a decade, London-based Silverstream Technologies has pioneered air lubrication technologies within shipping. As clean technology leaders, they understand the relevance and importance of the solution to the IMO’s decarbonisation goals and passionately believe in the role of proven, innovative technologies in enabling a more sustainable shipping industry.

From a successful initial trial installation on the Danebrog Rederi tanker MT Amalienborg, sponsored by Shell, their technology has since been proven on many cruise ship installations. The solution is market-mature and has been adopted by industry leaders including MSC, Grimaldi, Carnival, and many others.

Uniquely within the market, their air lubrication technology harnesses fluid shearing – a natural phenomenon that occurs when two fluids of differing density move past each other – to create a microbubble carpet across the full flat bottom of the hull. This friction-reducing microbubble carpet maximises the emissions reduction and efficiency savings potential of the technology.

This presentation will provide an overview of Silverstream Technologies proprietary Air Lubrication System, the Silverstream® System. The natural phenomenon underpinning the technology, the Kelvin Helmholtz instability phenomenon will be introduced, and the main types of air lubrication concepts will be described. Following discussion on the application of the technology for various vessel types, several case studies will be referenced to provide details on the installation and performance of the system.

Daniel joined Silverstream in 2020 as Programme Director with responsibility for Silverstream’s indirect sales channels. He has over 20 years’ experience in maritime, power generation and oil and gas industries, with Rolls-Royce, MAN Diesel & Turbo, Dresser-Rand, Siemens and, most recently, Ethos Energy where he was the Global Sales Director for its light gas turbine business. Throughout his career, he has held senior roles in Sales, Service, Business Development and Business Management and brings vast experience in ship equipment retrofit projects and servicing.

Daniel holds an MSc in Project Management from the University of Manchester, and an MBA from Manchester Business School.

Josh joined Silverstream Technologies as a Project Engineer in January 2019 after four and a half years working at QinetiQ, an industry leading science and technology company. Josh spent two years moving around the maritime division on a graduate scheme, gaining experience in naval architecture consultancy, ship design, autonomy and model testing. In 2016 Josh took on the role of Associate Engineer within the Ship Hydrodynamic Experimentation team at QinetiQ Haslar and gained experience leading trials both at model and full scale.

Josh then spent 18 months seconded to the Naval Design Partnership in Bristol to work on the Fleet Solid Support programme as Auxiliary Systems Engineer. His responsibilities included detailed design work for HVAC, cooling water and compressed air systems as well as development of the ship technical specification.

Josh graduated from Newcastle University in 2014 with a MEng degree in Marine Engineering. Josh is a member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology and is on the path to becoming a Chartered Engineer.

We are honored to have Robert G. Allan, P.Eng, FRINA, FSNAME give us a presentation on the Case for A BC Historical Vessel Registration Program.

Robert Allan has been working in the BC marine industry for decades, and recognizes the need for a program which can support the history of the industry on Canada’s West Coast.

That history has produced a number of classic types of West Coast vessels which evolved to cope with the challenges of our coastline, weather, and industry.

There are few remaining examples of some of these types of vessels. Tangible action to protect and preserve them is needed.

Coping with CoP26: Climate change and the global shipping industry in 2021

Summary:

Jeffrey Smith presents a survey of climate change developments in the global and Canadian shipping industries, in the context of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties next month.

Abstract:

The need to reckon with and reduce greenhouse gas emissions has been apparent to the shipping industry for almost 30 years, even as the overall size of the global trade fleet has steadily increased. The presentation first addresses the nature and trend in emissions. The successes of air pollution control of nitrogen and sulphur compounds are recalled. The treaty arrangements created by states in the International Maritime Organization are considered. Current regulatory measures and the notable commitment of IMO states in 2018 to extensive reductions are explored. The presentation concludes with an evaluation of requirements to come after CoP 26 and the trend of individual states to move to economic and direct regulation of emissions.

Dr. Jeffrey Smith, FCIMarE, is a member of the Atlantic Branch of the Institute.  A former RCN chief engineer, he researches climate change in the shipping industry including the development of economic and regulatory measures to address greenhouse gas emissions.  Jeffrey advises governments and classification societies in matters as diverse as environmental protection in the Arctic, shipbuilding programs, transportation safety and the law of the sea.  On the faculty of The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs in Ottawa, he is also international law counsel to a government in Africa.
